US President Barack Obama plans to head to Italy for the next G8 summit in July, which will take place in L’Aquila from July 6 – 8. The summit has been moved from the original host city of La Maddalena to L’Aquila in support of the area after an earthquake struck on April 6th. L’Aquila is in the mountainous Abruzzo region that is east of Rome.
Mr. Obama will have a busy trip abroad when he heads to Europe. While in Italy he also plans to meet with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in Rome before heading to the summit. The US President also recently announced plans to meet with Pope Benedict XVI while in Italy.
In addition to the trip to Italy based around the G8 summit, Mr. Obama is visiting several other countries while abroad. He will fly to Moscow for meetings with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev on July 6-8 before heading to Italy. After the G8 summit, President Obama heads to Africa and the sub-Saharan nation of Ghana. In the capital city of Accra he plans to meet with Ghanaian President John Atta-Mills to discuss a range of regional issues. Michelle Obama is planning on travelling to Italy to be with the president during the trip.
