The 7th International Sand Sculpture Festival (FIESA) is set to take place in the town of Pera in Portugal’s Algarve region beginning on May 22. It is considered the largest festival of sand sculpture in the world by many aficionados and this year’s spectacle will run all summer and end on October 22.
The festival opens to the public on May 22, and some 60 international teams have been busy completing their astounding creations to prepare for the opening. The SandCity is open to the public daily from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 9 pm.
Pera is not far from Albufeira, and the festival is located on the E524 road just outside of town. Sculptures are spread out over 15,000 square meters and use some 35,000 tons of sand. This year’s theme is Discoveries, and you can see amazing works of sand in the shape of The Thinker, astronauts and the space shuttle, airplanes and more. This is well worth a visit when having a holiday in the Algarve.
