Emaar Properties recently won the contract to construct the next tallest building in the world, the Kingdom Tower in Saudi Arabia. In a deal worth 100 billion Saudi riyals, or US$ 26.6 billion, Emaar was chosen from a final group of five companies to build the 1,100 meters-tall tower in Kingdom City, Jeddah.

The new building will be taller than Emaar’s own building, the Burj Dubai in Dubai, which is currently the tallest building in the world at over 800 meters and is nearing completion. The Kingdom City development is planned as one of the largest ever in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom Tower will be centerpiece of the new project, which will be spread out over 23 million square meters.

When complete, Kingdom City is expected to house some 80,000 people. There will residential, commercial, education and hotel facilities, all approximately 20 kilometers from Jeddah’s old city.
