Queen Sofia of Spain recently flew from Santander, Spain to London via a Ryanair flight that cost just £13. The queen was visiting the northern Spanish city with King Juan Carlos to mark Spain’s Armed Forces Day. She flew to London to visit her brother Constantine, the former King of Greece, who recently had heart surgery at a London hospital.
A spokesman at the royal palace said in a statement that: “Whenever possible the royals use Spanish airlines but in this case Ryanair was the most suitable for the journey.” It is believed that this is the first time a senior member of the House of Bourbon has used a low-cost airline.
Ryanair is the only airline that offers direct flights between London and Santander. The flight that Queen Sofia was on landed at Stansted airport and took approximately two hours. Santander is in the northern part of Cantabria along the Bay of Biscay.
