The largest airport in Oman, Muscat International Airport, is undergoing a major renovation and expansion. The development of the airport includes a brand new terminal building, 32 air bridges, two runways, 6,000 parking spaces and more.
Muscat International Airport is located near Oman’s capital of Muscat and, as the country’s busiest, had some 3.2 million destination passengers in 2008 and is nearing the limit of the current facilities. The project is scheduled for completion in 2011 and will also allow for additional expansion as needed in the future. It is expected that Muscat will have some 12 million passengers traveling through it within a few years, so the new facilities are very important.
Some important aspects of the redevelopment project include adding a new runway as well as expanding the existing runway to handle the Airbus A380, the largest passenger plane in the world. A new motorway will be constructed to whisk people to and from the airport with a minimal drive time. The new terminal will be constructed between the airport’s runways and will have a floor area of 290,000 square feet.
In addition to the expansion of Muscat International Airport, a new airport in Duqm is planned. That project is now undergoing the initial design and bidding phases.
