With the prospect of a double-dip recession, stagnating house prices and severe Government spending cuts, more and more Brits are considering a move abroad for a better life. And, new research has found that Brits are more mindful of the opportunities to buy an overseas home.
Brits looking for a better life abroad
Research recently published by Glotel showed that more than half of the UKââ¬â¢s working population were now considering moving overseas to work. Popular destinations include Portugal, Spain and Italy.
Rhiannon Davies, director of Shelter Offshore, the lifestyle magazine, said: “Brits are aware they can get away from broken and bankrupt Britain and build a better life abroad and they want to embrace the opportunities now.”
The Glotel research found that one in six Brits would be keen to pursue an opportunity to work abroad within the next five years. The survey also found that nearly 12 per cent of UK workers have already worked abroad for a spell, and just over 8 per cent would consider buying a foreign home if their employer asked them to relocate overseas.
Important factors to consider when moving abroad to work
However, if you are planning to move abroad to work, you should bear two important factors in mind:
÷ Make sure that your UK qualifications are valid and accepted in the country you are moving to. Speak to employers to make sure that the qualifications are universally accepted
÷ Make sure that you are fluent in the language of your chosen country before you depart, particularly if you will be seeking work immediately upon your arrival. Learning Portuguese before landing in the country seeking work will be a huge advantage
Ms Davies from Shelter Offshore also suggested that ââ¬Ësearching for work in advance of making the move will make the entire move abroad mush easierââ¬â¢.
“[It will] take away one of the greatest concerns – namely, affording expatriation,” she added.
