Dubai International Airport  (DIA) is having another banner year, setting new records for passengers and cargo moving through it. As the primary gateway to the booming Emirate along the Persian Gulf, DIA has expanded to keep up with demand. From January through September of 2007, 25.4 million passengers passed through the airport, an increase of just over 19% from the same period in 2006. August and July were the busiest months for the airport this year with 3.2 million and 3.08 million passengers, respectively.

Cargo traffic also increased during the first nine months of the year. Dubai Cargo Village, the cargo section of the airport, handled 1.13 million tons of cargo in 2007, up 11.08% from the same period in 2006. July was the busiest month for cargo, with Cargo Village handling 135,027 tons that month.

Plane traffic saw a growth of 9.86% between January and September this year, with 191,974 flights into and out of the airport during that period. July had 21,705 flights as the busiest month of the year.

Despite the continued growth in all phases of airport traffic, the Dubai International Airport has grown with the needs and maintained the quality of its services, according to His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman and CEO of Emirates Group.

“Dubai International Airport has been growing at an average of 15% annually since 2000, and we expect the growth rate to pick up pace and climb further up over the coming years,” he noted. The airport is expanding with a new passenger terminal and a mega-cargo terminal. A major portion of the expansion project will open in mid 2008. By 2010, it is expected that DIA will be capable of handling 75 million passengers annually.

DIA is served by some 75 airlines, including British Airways, Emirates, Aer Lingus, Delta, Aeroflot, Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific and Virgin Atlantic, among many others. Emirates operates the most flights to and from the UK, with service to London, Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and Birmingham.
