The Turkish city of Bursa has just launched a new campaign to lure travelers to the city. Entitled “To Bursa on the weekend,” the campaign hopes to attract some of the many travelers who are an increasingly important part of the country’s economy. Bursa is located just inland from the Sea of Marmara and is a little over 100 kilometers south of Istanbul, making it an ideal destination for a weekend getaway.
The city was once the capital of the Ottoman Empire and in more recent years has been known as Turkey’s automotive and textile capital. There are plenty of cultural and historical sites around the city for visitors to enjoy. The area has a very nice climate and also has a longstanding reputation as a spa destination. There are thermal springs in the northwestern suburb of Çekirge and the area is surrounded by farms and fields.
Bursa saw 470,000 tourists in 2007 and would like to have that number up to one million by the end of 2010. By 2015 the city wants to have two million local tourists and another 500,000 international visitors by the end of 2015. The campaign is being organized by the Bursa Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
