Croatia’s capital city of Zagreb has a spectacular ski resort just minutes from downtown. The Sljeme ski area is a popular destination on the slopes of Medvednica hill and is typically host to a couple of World Cup Ski races each winter. This year the women’s race took place on the first weekend of 2009 and saw German Maria Riesch take home the Snow Queen Trophy.
American Lindsey Vonn was the leader after the first run and had a considerable lead as she neared the bottom of the second run. But then she made a mistake just before the finish line and skied off the course, providing the chance for Riesch to take the victory. Italy’s Nicole Gius was second and Sarka Zahrobska from the Czech Republic took the final podium place.
The same slopes will host the Men’s World Cup ski racers on Tuesday, January 6 as they compete for valuable points in the slalom. Defending World Cup champion Bode Miller of the US will attempt to make up more ground on current leader Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway. Other well known skiers will be there, including Benjamin Raich, Dider Cuche and Hermann Maier.
Croatia has a number of fine ski resorts, but the proximity of Sljeme to the capital city makes it particularly attractive. Additionally, it is another reason for Croatian property buyers to look at some of the many properties available in Zagreb and nearby.
