The Brazilian state of Minas Gerais won four of eight trophies in the Routes of Brazil awards sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism. The awards are granted by the Ministry of Tourism in recognition for the most popular and successful tourism promotions throughout the country. In addition to the four awards won by Minas Gerais, which is in southeast Brazil and is home to Belo Horizonte, the states of Piauí, Ceará, Maranhão and Paraná won the other four trophies.

Routes of Brazil is the culmination of the Ministry of Tourism’s Regionalization Program, which seeks to improve tourist services and create longer stays and spending by tourists throughout the country. There were over 90 different tourist destinations in the competition, with the state of Minas Gerais as the overall winner. Minas Gerais translates to general mines and comes from the era when gold was discovered and mined in the state.

The town of Itabirito in Minas Gerais won the award for Tourist Destination Management and Santana do Riacho won Environmental Sustainability in Municipalities. Also winning awards from the state were the Association of the Tourist Circuit of Gold for best Planning and Management of Regional Tourism, and the website of Estrada Real for Promotional Website.

The secretary of Tourism for the state of Minas Gerais, Erica Drummond, said the state was proud of its awards, and in particular as overall winner. “This award is a recognition for the commitment and dedication of our Tourist Circuit Associations, which work in line with our public policy for tourism, aiming to make Minas Gerais into the best and most visited tourist destination in the country,” she said.
