The Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has selected the TornadoTower in Doha, Qatar as the best tall building in the Middle East and Africa Region. The CTBUH announced the winner for each of its four regions recently and will crown the “2009 Best Tall Building Overall” at the 2009 awards dinner in October. The other regions are Asia & Australasia, Europe, and the Americas.
The TornadoTower has 53 floors of office space and was completed in December, 2008. The 200 meter tall building aims to minimize effects on the environment through optimal site utilization, innovative material use and reduced natural resource use. The building is encased in an outer steel structure that can be lit up with a special lighting system at night and can provide over 35,000 different light displays.
The building itself has modern touches and amenities that make it a premier commercial space in downtown Doha. There is a fine dining restaurant on the 28th floor with 360 degree views of the city and bay. One floor below there is a fully-equipped gym and exercise facility. The building has 24-hour security, 1,700 parking spaces and high-speed lifts. The TornadoTower is a modern masterpiece for the Middle East.
