With the massive Matterhorn towering nearby, the Swiss town of Zermatt is an ideal place for a weekend ski holiday or, if you want something more, a vacation home to relax in whenever you have the chance. Skiers love this corner of the Alps, with over 200 miles of marked trails and even more for the adventurous.
Skiers can enjoy any number of lifts and different terrain, from the Klein Matterhorn and a trip into Italy to the Rothorn and Sunnega peaks. For those who spend a few days here, it is easy to not ever ski the same run twice. When the day on the slopes is done, then the town has plenty for après-ski as well. There are many fine restaurants and taverns, as well as more trendy clubs for any who want to dance the night away.
Those who want to have some more fun can enjoy the Gornergrat toboggan course. Of course, you might come away more bruised from a few trips down the hill on the wooden sled than on skis. All of this can be had with a weekend trip or your own holiday home in the mountains. The town is a well-known destination, so it tends to be on the pricier side for those who want a permanent place. Some of the homes here are quite nice, though, and you can always find a view of the Matterhorn it seems. Apartments can be rented in a wide range of price ranges, and there are hotels and lodges to fit every budget as well.
Getting to Zermatt is reasonably easy, with direct flights to Zurich and travel by train to the village from there. The trip is about three and half hours and offers some spectacular scenery in its own right. Most of the travel around the area is on train or tram, so there isn’t a big need for a car.
