The Queen Elizabeth 2 is making its final trip as it heads toward its new home in Dubai. The grand old ocean liner is the oldest ship of its type still in activity and has been the flagship of Britain’s Cunard Lines since it entered service in 1969.
On Monday, November 17 the ship will makes its last visit to Italy, stopping in the port of Naples. In its 39 years at sea, the QE2 has travelled over 10,000 kilometers and hosted over 2.5 million passengers. After leaving Naples the ship will make stops at Malta, Alexandria and Port Said before heading to Dubai. The ship will visit Valletta, the capital of Malta on November 18, then sail to Alexandria, Egypt where it will dock for the day on the 20th. She then makes her final passage through the Suez Canal on the 22nd before heading to Dubai. The QE2 is scheduled to make port in her new home on the 27th of November, 2008.
Once in Dubai, the ship will be anchored off the world’s largest man-made island, the Palm Jumeirah. At the Palm Jumeirah, the QE2 will serve as a luxury hotel, retail and entertainment destination. Dubai World, the new owners of the ship want to re-create the original interior of the great vessel as it was when it was launched.
