One of UK’s longest
running ‘For Sale By Owner’ website The Little House Company is advising graduates
and students that good exams results are not all that’s needed to secure
employment. The For Sale by Owner property website has found that over 76% of
applicants for its voluntary writing community failed to meet the grade for
employers, owing to lack of previous experience. One writer who secured a
position after obtaining experience writing content for the website is
available for interview to describe his experiences.

The British media industry is one of the most popular
sectors for graduates and competition for jobs is fierce. If you want a career
in writing or journalism, you will need to supplement your qualifications with
industry experience, especially while studying.

The number of journalism graduates is at an all-time high,
and around 1 in every 5 graduates available to work is unemployed, according to
the Office for
National Statistics
.

The most commonly cited reason for writing graduates
inability to secure work was ‘lack of industry experience’

Writers and authors have projected employment growth of 6%
between 2012 and 2020 – Fuelled by growing demand for writers and authors who
have adapted to online media and are comfortable working with digital tools.

In fact 78% of journalism and mass communications graduates
took 6-8 months to find employment according to Prospects.ac.uk.

Nick Marr, founding partner, The Little House Company

 â€œStudents and
graduates need to reduce the risk to employers by offering hard evidence that
they can do the job. Gaining work experience shows a level of commitment and
will develop skills that will impress a potential employer.”

One qualified writer Davide Purpora, writer who had failed several
interviews owing to lack on the job experience went on to secure a role in the
city after a short time gaining experience.

 â€œAs a newcomer
writer, working for The Little House Company was a valuable and helpful experience
that enabled me to build up my experience and enrich my cv. In fact, it took me
just two months of work with them to find a permanent paid writing job in
Canary Wharf.”
