Despite the ongoing political pressures in Thailand, Phuket developments are still going strong. 30 new hotels are at various stages of development and construction in the country’s resort capital, according to information from hospitality consulting firm C9 Hotelworks. Nearly 5,000 new rooms are scheduled to open over the next three years, adding to the nearly 40,000 rooms already on the island.

Branded and star-rated international hotels have approximately 10,000 of the current available rooms in Phuket. The new rooms coming on line will add significantly to the international standard, with almost half of these rooms being upscale. About 40 percent are set for midscale rooms, 9 percent budget/economy and 3 percent extended stay.

2009 will see the largest increase in supply as over 1,800 new rooms are planned to open on Phuket. According to C9 Hotelworks Managing Director Bill Barnett much of the new luxury units will be on the east coast of the island.

“The east coast and Phang Nga bay are set to define a new era of luxury properties at the back of offerings which include The Yamu – designed by the design dream team Philippe Starck/Jean Michel Gathy, Jumeriah Private Island and Taj Exotica,” noted Barnett.
