The 2009 Nordic World Championships are coming to the Czech Republic for two weeks at the end of February. Running from 18 February to 1 March 2009, the town of Liberec will see the best skiers in the world compete in cross-country skiing and ski jumping.
The World Championships take place every two years and will be taking place in the Czech Republic for the first time ever. The 2007-2008 men’s cross country World Cup Champion, Lukas Bauer, represents the Czech Republic and is hoping to bring home the gold for the home crowds. A brand new cross-country facility was built in Vesec u Liberce to host the events, which will take place from 24 February to 1 March.
The ski jumping towers in Liberec will see some classic competition between last year’s world cup winner, the Austrian Thomas Morgenstern, legendary Adam Malysz from Poland. Also, for the first time ever, women will compete in ski jumping at the World Championships. German Ulrika Grassler, the Women’s Continental Cup winner, will be a strong favorite.
The town of Liberec is in the north central part of the Czech Republic, a little over 100 kilometers from Prague.
