Indian police have launched an investigation into a Scottish
island sold recently, as the ownerââ¬â¢s tax affairs fall under scrutiny.
Yoga guru Baba Ramdev bought Little Cumbrae in Clyde, one of
several recent Scottish islands for sale, in 2009, but is now being investigated by
Indiaââ¬â¢s Enforcement Directorate, which focuses on commercial crime.
The island, which is located close to Largs in Ayshire, was
purchased by the swami with the aim of creating a retreat for his followers,
who believe that Ramdev can cure conditions such as HIV and cancer. The
directorate recently arrested Ramdev for breaching Indiaââ¬â¢s foreign exchange
laws.
Ramdev currently holds a fortune of approximately ã220m and
has been accused of using his business as an alleged front for money
laundering.
A spokesman told Herald
Scotland: ââ¬ÅWe have sent certain queries to the authorities in UK regarding
the Little Cumbrae Island deal.ââ¬Â
