Tourist arrivals to India for February jumped up to over 500,000 entries for the month, compared to less than 490,000 for January, according to the Ministry of Tourism. Tourism is still down somewhat, thanks in large part to the attacks in Mumbai last year, but the upward trend is a good sign that things are beginning to return to normal.
Secretary Sujit Banergee recently told reporters in India that “It is great that footfalls have increased once again. The ongoing downturn and the Mumbai terror attacks had dampened the mood and we are now again witnessing a resurgence.”
He noted that “In February, India received about 500,000 foreign visitors, as against the figure of 487,000 in January. However, the year-on-year figure for February is still down as compared to the figure of 561,000 reported in the corresponding month of 2008.”
The government has initiated its Visit India 2009 campaign along with travel operators and hospitality industry representatives. They are visiting 20 major cities across the world to help promote the country, and it appears to be working.
