A new center dedicated to Florence’s artisans is getting ready to open in the Oltrarno neighborhood, where these trades have been practiced for centuries. The new Spazio-Arte e Meistieri (SAM), located in the Conventino, will have some 3,500 square meters of space for a range of artisans and their workshops.

The new facility will include an information center to promote Florence’s century-olds artisans and their crafts as well as six apartments to host foreign craftspeople who come to learn. Sculpture, painting, restoration, blacksmithing, woodworking and engraving are just a few of the crafts and fine trades that will be practiced and studied at SAM.

SAM is set to have its opening on April 21 in the former home of the Monastero di Santa Teresa della Carmelitane Scalze, located near the Piazza Tasso in the Oltrano. There will be public gardens, exhibitions and conferences for the various trades and crafts that are practiced here.
