Facebook officials have revealed plans to build an apartment complex on the site of their headquarters in California, ibtimes.com reports.
The social media giant’s new staff development will be situated at Menlo Park, right next door to its offices. It has been proposed as a way to help alleviate the shortage of housing in the area, which has been a source of difficulty for Facebook employees.
According to huffingtonpost.com, the complex will comprise 394 units which have use of ‘resort-style amenities’ such as private swimming pools, a clubhouse, rooftop entertainment deck and outdoor kitchens.
Developed by St Anton Partners, it will also offer residents shops, cafs, a dog care facility, dry cleaner and yoga studio.
The developers have said that all but 15 of the apartments will be open to the public, which will inevitably create a lot of interest both domestically and among those searching for overseas investment property opportunities – especially those within Silicon Valley.
The idea has come received criticism, however, with some commentators calling the move ‘the next step in blurring lines between work and personal life’.
A spokeswoman for Facebook asserted this was far from the intention: “We’re certainly excited to have more housing options closer to campus, but we believe that people work at Facebook because what they do is rewarding and they believe in our mission.”
