November 4, 2008: The Dubai Mall opened to visitors and shoppers today. There are over 600 retail outlets and the Dubai Aquarium & Discovery Center. While that is a huge number of stores, it’s still only about half of what the mall will have when it is completed. The mall is part of Downtown Burj Dubai, a 500-acre mixed-use development anchored by the iconic Burj Dubai, the world’s tallest building.
The aquarium has already been awarded a Guinness World Record for the World’s Largest Acrylic Panel. In the center of the mall, the 50 meter long aquarium is flanked by two glass tunnels at varying levels offering windows into the incredible diversity of marine life. Travelling through these, visitors are treated to an exceptional underwater experience as they see eye-to-eye with sharks, stingrays and other species of fish in their natural habitat.
Over 1,200 retail stores, 160 food and beverage outlets and some 3.77 million square feet of leased space will make up the completed mall. Some other attractions at the mall are the SEGA Republic®, an indoor theme park; KidZania®, a children’s educational and entertainment concept; The Grove, an open air streetscape with fully retractable roof and a 22-screen Cineplex, which will all come on line in 2009.
The Dubai Mall has confirmed its two department stores are Galeries Lafayette and Bloomingdale’s, both making their regional debut. There are over 14,000 undercover car park spaces across three car parks and an adjoining luxury 5-star hotel – The Address, Dubai Mall – with 250 rooms and 450 serviced residences.
