The government of Cyprus has recently given the go-ahead for as many as four new marinas for the island country in a bid to increase tourism. The resort destination of Limassol will be home to the grandest marina of all.

Limassol Marina will begin construction in early 2009 and will have its own artificial island. There will be 1,000 berths available with 400 connected to the mainland and 600 on the new island. The man-made island will also host services, properties and entertainment venues. This spectacular new project is planned for completion in 2013.

The other marinas will be constructed at Larnaca, Paphos and Ayia Napa. In addition to the boating facilities, there will be property development around each of the marinas. Each new marina is expected to hold at least 900 berths, some of which will be available for super yachts over 35 meters long.

Antonis Paschalides, Minister of Commerce says, “Our vision is for maritime tourism to become a predominant source of revenue and the backbone of the island’s development effort.”
