While the Flamingo Coast of Mexico has traditionally been overlooked by those who want a holiday or retirement home, it is quickly becoming a hot destination. This stretch of white sandy beaches is located along the northern Yucatan coast with the town of Progreso as its main tourist destination. This port city is becoming a popular cruise ship stopover, and the old city of Merida is only 20 miles to the south as well.
Not surprisingly, the name of the coast along the northern Yucatan peninsula is taken from the many flamingos whose home is in this part of the country. The largest concentrations of them are at Celestun on the west end and Coloradas to the east. You can see them regulalry at Uaymitun just east of Progreso, and they fly over Progreso along the beach almost everyday.
The beaches here are sandy with lots of shells and are great for families and those who like calmer waters. This part of the coast is along the Gulf of Mexico, so it doesn’t get the bigger waves to the east off of Cancun and Cozumel. The waves are usually less than 3 feet and the water is very shallow, so it is ideal for swimmers and those who want to relax in the water. The sea is usually calm at the beach in the mornings and there is often a good sea breeze in the afternoon. Overall, this is a great area for shelling, swimming, windsurfing, sailing, fishing, bird watching and just enjoying the beach.
This part of Mexico is becoming increasingly popular, and more and more resorts and developments are springing up along the Flamingo Coast. One of the newer resorts that is under way is Flamingo Lakes Resort offering luxury property in Mexico, which will have a wide range of services and homes for buyers and visitors. There will be a village square, shops, medical facilities, guest lodge and more, while 840 acres of the property has been set aside as a private nature reserve for all to enjoy. Other recreation activities available include the beach club, marina, tennis, horse riding, a spa as well as health and fitness center. It is a great time to enjoy the beautiful Flamingo Coast.
