The world’s tallest building officially opened on January 4, 2010 in Dubai. The Burj Khalifa, formerly known as the Burj Dubai, is a record 828 meters, or 2717 feet, tall. The official final height was revealed at the festive opening ceremonies in Dubai. Thousands of people were on hand for the spectacular opening. There were also thousands of fireworks as well as skydivers, fountains, a laser show and more.

The world’s tallest building has 162 floors and was designed by US firm Skidmore, Owens and Merrill, which also designed the tallest tower in the US. Chicago’s WillisTower (formerly known as the SearsTower) is just over half the height of the Burj at 442 meters. The Burj Khalifa is a multi-use structure with a hotel, offices, retail stores and residential housing. There are nearly 1,000 apartments; most of which are sold but a few remain available. There is also an observation deck on the 124th floor that is now open to the public.

The Burj is the heart of a 500-acre development in Dubai, currently called Downtown Burj Dubai. The development stretches along the shores of the BurjDubaiLake.
