Dubai’s Burj Dubai Tower has reached a new record height of 688 meters, according to the developer Emaar Properties. The building became the world’s tallest structure after surpassing a TV tower in the United States earlier this year, and is well on its way to becoming the tallest structure in the world in several categories. It will be the tallest building, have the highest occupied floor and the tallest top point.
The exterior of the building is nearing completion and work is starting on the interior. It will have ultra modern finishes and energy efficient technologies to keep it running at peak performance levels. The Burj Dubai is expected to have at least 160 floors when completed in 2009.
Burj Dubai is the main structure in Emaar’s grand project, Downtown Burj Dubai. The company has called this development the heart of the new Dubai, and it will be a mixed use community with hotels, business facilities, residences, shopping malls and recreational facilities.
The Dubai Mall, which is part of Downtown Burj Dubai, is scheduled to open in October of this year. It will have 12 million square feet of shopping space and have the Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Center.
Mr. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar Properties, said: “On October 30, all public areas of The Dubai Mall will be open to customers at the same time, creating a retail event unlike anything ever seen in the region. The Dubai Aquarium & Discovery Centre, the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink, the world’s largest indoor Gold Souk and hundreds of retailers will open simultaneously giving visitors several retail and leisure options.”
