Belfast’s Sailortown Looks for Redevelopment

The Sailortown area of Belfast, which has traditionally been home to a community of dock workers, is in need of redevelopment and the city is looking to prepare a masterplan for the area. The Department for Social Development and the Strategic Investment Board are working on plans for a new mixed-use development of the area.

GVA Grimley, a leading UK property consultancy, has been appointed to prepare a masterplan for Sailortown. Gerry Hughes, executive director of GVA Grimley, noted that “Sailortown is a forgotten part of Belfast city centre. Despite its rich maritime heritage and the investments by Laganside to the riverfront its isolation from the heart of the city centre is obvious.”

To help bridge that isolation, a new pedestrian bridge is planned to the Titanic Quarter on the eastern side of the Lagan River. A draft of the masterplan is expected to be available for review by June of 2009.
