Antalya Turkey has been recognized as a premium golfing destination by the  The International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). The global trade organization for golf tourism, annually presents awards for the best resorts and countries for golf throughout the world, and in 2008 Turkey won for the Golf Destination of the Year – Europe. Ali Sahin, Director of Golf, Cornelia Golf Club & IAGTO Turkey Chapter Chairman said: “We are very proud and happy to win this award. The award means we have achieved something because we have worked very hard over the last 10 years. We started off with just one course in Turkey, and now we have 14. Over the next two or three years there will be about 30 courses throughout Turkey.”

Turkey has seen its profile as a golfing destination increase in recent years, with new courses and awards. While Spain is the undisputed capital of European Golf Vacations with literally hundreds of courses for all levels of players, not to mention the crowds to go with it, Turkey has seen tremendous growth in the past decade when it comes to golf. When it comes to golf in Turkey, the Mediterranean city of Antalya is the place to be. There are other very nice courses throughout the country, but this southern city has the most courses in one area.

One of the advantages that the country has in developing its golf industry is that the courses are being built for destination golfers, so they are top notch. Antalya is a major holiday destination with an international airport. The city is the top golfing location in the country with several nice courses located in the outlying resort town of Belek, just a few kilometers to the southwest of Antalya.

The National Golf Course opened as the first major Turkish Golf Course in 1994 and has been recognized as one of the best courses in Europe. Gloria Golf Resort is a gorgeous and challenging course. Spectacular views of the Taurus Mountains and a beach lapped by the Mediterranean on its southern edge make Gloria Golf a great luxury golf resort. The 27 hole Nick Faldo designed Cornelia Golf Course opened late in 2006 in Belek and has several challenging options for golfers of all levels. Colin Montgomerie, eight-time European player of the year, has designed the Papillon Golf Course which is due to be officially opened in September.

Other courses in the area include the Antalya Golf Club with two courses, the Pasha Course and the Sultan Golf Course; the Sueno Golf Club with two courses as well; Kaya Golf Club; Tat Golf Club; and Lykia Links Golf Club. If you want a change from the crowds and prices elsewhere, then Antalya, Turkey is the place to go for some great golf.
