About Rio Maior

Situated midway between Santarém and Óbidos, in a landscape of pine and eucalyptus forets, Rio Maior is an agricultural centre of very remote origin, with numerous prehistoric artefacts having been found in the surrounding areas.
Rich with opencast natural mineral salt deposits, Rio Maior already existed in the 16th century, eventually being granted town status in 1836.
What to see. Besides several 17th and 18th century manor houses, Rio Maior is worth visiting for its 16th-century parish church in the centre of town.
Nearby. Rio Maior is a convenient base from which to explore many of the region’s most important attractions, including the medieval walled village of Óbidos and the impressive churches at Alcobaça and Batlaha. Also within easy striking distance are the golden, sandy beaches of Nazaré and São Martinho do Porto to the west.

Overseas property developers are now attracting property buyers with a new trend in designer homes. I have noticed that increasingly homes are being sold with a celebrity architects name firmly attached to it promotional material. Buyers are being presented with designer names as a new feature to consider when buying a home overseas.

 Gone are the days when a buyer looks simply at price and location, many sophisticated buyers are also seeking the name of the architects or firm of architects that have created the building. This trend seems set to continue as each developer fights to stand out from the crowd. I can see the day when buyers will expect a designer name to be associated with a new overseas property.
 
Homes with designer labels are popping up all over the globe and offer the buyer a unique building with often modernist design. Designs like this are all about space, light and clean lines.

I would say that the British love great architecture, this is demonstrated by the continuing popularity of Channel 4 TV called Grand Design .The series concentrates on designer homes with professional and amateur architects who unveil some of the most stunning designer properties.

 
The UK has its own Housing Design Awards which are promoted by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the National House-Building Council, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Town Planning Institute. Awards are for projects of high quality.

An entire resort dedicated to designer homes is underway at Bom Sucesso Portugal. It has employed numerous architects to create a Design Resort Leisure Golf & Spa. Award winning architects such Portugal’s Alvaro Siza Vieira and Spain’s Josep Llinas have all created their own designs for the resort. The project is said to be one of the most ambitious ever planned for a luxury tourist resort. It represents one of the trends in the industry to use well known architects to design new developments. Dellis Cay is being developed by Turkish tourism magnate Dr. Cem Kinay. Piero Lissini is designing the main hotel and a set of villas in his typically modern, bold and simple style. In a recent interview in Dr. Kinay notes that “The architects are our biggest selling point.”
 
Other resorts around the world are using architects to get a leg up on the competition. Melvin Villarroel is working on a community in Marbella, Spain called Lomas Club. Homes at this development are also being designed by Angel Taborda and Victoria Guana, and Villarroel is also working on several other new resorts in Spain.
 
Matteo Thun is designing a new set of fascinating apartments in the Austrian resort of Katschberg called Edel:Weiss. Sir Norman Foster is working on several projects; one is in Egypt called Serrenia and there is also Corniche Bay resort in Mauritius. These villas will only cost £1.7 million.

What is for sure is that overseas property investors are now getting in on the action. Architects are putting a different value to a home this reason alone mean that the designer home trend seems set to continue.
