Why Invest in New Zealand?

[ Posted in New Zealand Property, Property Investment on March 11th, 2008 ]

New Zealand’s Strong Rental Environment

The rental environment in New Zealand is very strong, especially in the inner city regions of our largest cities - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

With home ownership levels being at an all time low (from 73.7% in 1986 to 66.9% in 2006), our first home buyers are finding it even more difficult to get into the property market.  It is because of this more and more people are choosing to rent and the demand for rental properties is only going to increase as housing affordability decreases.

Strong Population Growth

New Zealand is currently experiencing increases in population due to its immigration policy and birth rates.

A recent survey ranked New Zealand as the fourth most popular choice for Britons wanting to settle abroad. New Zealand is also an attractive destination for those migrating from the pacific islands, adding to the rich cultural diversity in its vibrant urban centres.

As a consequence of this influx in migrants, many parts of the country are experiencing housing shortages translating into very strong rental yields, a trend that’s expected to continue.

Inner city living is one of the most important changes in settlement patterns throughout New Zealand. More and more people are giving up the dream of a house in the suburbs, instead opting to own an apartment in the central business district of our major cities.  For an astute property investor, that means excellent growth potential, demand and return on investment.

New Zealand offers an Exceptionally Good Investment Environment

Over the last 20 years, New Zealand has adapted its fiscal and legal environment to attract high levels of foreign investment. New Zealand has a stable and developed economy with a highly regulated and secure property market.

New Zealand today has one of the lowest tax environments in the world with no stamp duty, no land tax, no capital gains tax, no inheritance tax and no investment tax to pay – all great news for property investors.

New Zealand’s Clean Green Image

New Zealand is a land of unrivalled beauty. Its rugged bush, pure mountain rainforests and serene lakes contribute to the clean green image it portrays internationally.

At the same time, New Zealand is a dynamic 21st century society with sophisticated cities and a vibrant arts and cultural scene.

With the global success of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the splendour of the country’s natural landscape was brought to the world’s attention and tourist numbers rose dramatically as a result.

New Zealand cities are constantly rated very high in international surveys and in 2007 Auckland was ranked as the 5th most liveable city in the world. The Worldwide Quality of Living Survey, conducted by human resources consultancy firm Mercer, is based on an evaluation of 39 criteria contributing to the overall livability of each city. Wellington also featured in the top 20.
