Frederick, Maryland is a Great Escape from the City

An hour west of Baltimore and the massive urban sprawl of the area is the small town of Frederick, Maryland. This town grew up as a major trading post along some of the country’s first trade routes to the west and now has a collection of wonderful old homes. The 50-block downtown area is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has hundreds of homes in many different styles popular over the past four centuries.

Carroll Creek runs through the downtown area, which is full of cafes and small shops as well as a pedestrian park. The autumn is a beautiful time to visit this part of the state, as the trees are full of color and the old white churches stand out in the crisp fall air.

In many of the old homes there are now a number of galleries and trendy restaraunts. There are also some markets that feature organic produce and artisanal cheeses from nearby farms that can make a perfect complement to any meal. Antique hunters can find many little shops to indulge their passion, and Civil War buffs will also find some interesting bits of history around town.

Frederick is a wonderful town for those who want to get away from the city, for a day, weekend or lifetime.
