Northern Delaware officials are working on a plan to expand the region’s biking and walking trails. The Wilmington Area Planning Council is working together with the national Rails-to-Trails Conservancy on a proposal to increase the pathways, which will help get cars off the road and people outside more.
Investments in pedestrian and bike paths could decrease car traffic and expand the recreational opportunities for local residents, argued officials from WILMAPCO. In addition to getting cars off the road and decreasing commuter traffic, the new paths will help decrease emissions of green house gasses and improve public health.
The projects proposed by WILMAPCO include recreational greenways and pedestrian walkways as well as an expansion of current routes. Other possibilities include bicycle-sharing programs and improvements in the existing sidewalks. The organization said that filling the gaps in Delaware’s 1,000 mile network of sidewalks and paths as well as improving access to transit services could provide a great incentive for people to shift out of cars.
