Some communities in the United States are more self-contained than others, and in today’s economic climate that can be a very good thing. Money magazine recently put together a list of cities with the shortest average commutes in the country, and Marquette, Michigan led the way with less than 9 minutes of drive time each way, every day. Marquette was followed by Hays, Kansas and Laramie, Wyoming.
Marquette is the home to Northern Michigan University and has a regional hospital, so residents don’t have to go far for basic services. The city is just 11.4 square miles in size so there isn’t far to go, wherever you go. Of course, some might not appreciate the 140 inches of snow the town gets every year. Hays, Kansas is a bit farther to the south, but offers a similar scene: lots of employers in a small town of just 7.6 square miles. The town is home to a major medical center, Fort Hays State University and a regional airport.
Like the other two towns above it, Laramie, Wyoming is home to a university and hospital. The University of Wyoming provides more than 5,000 local jobs for the 11.1 square mile city. Following Laramie on the list are Aberdeen, South Dakota; Naples, Florida; Bainbridge Island, Washington; Westport, Connecticut and State College, Pennsylvania.
