The small town of Potosi, Wisconsin is the new home of the National Brewery Museum, which recently opened in June. The new museum is housed in the old Potosi Brewery, which was founded in 1851. The facility is also serving as a center of revitalization in this town not far from the Mississippi River in the southwest part of Wisconsin.
The National Brewery Museum includes a restaurant, microbrewery, gift shop, and more. Next door is the Holiday Gardens event center which can host meeting and banquets for more than 500 people. With the new museum and events center, there are plans to turn the town into a destination for those who visit the tri-state area.
There are a number of other major tourist attractions in the surrounding area, including Mineral Point, Prairie du Chien, the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium and the House on the Rock. With so much to do in what has been a relatively quiet area, residents are seeing the potential for making it a true destination. Some envision it being the home to unique destination shops similar to Galena, Illinois.
The Potosi Brewery produced beer in southwestern Wisconsin for the many lead miners who moved to this part of the state in the first half of the 19th century. The brewery closed in 1972, but is now making beer once again.
