The annual fall foliage celebration of colors across New England is just starting to occur. The most noticeable color changes start to occur in late September and into October. Typically, depending on the weather, the color in the northern states is at its peak in mid October, and it moves down into southern New England in late October and early November. This time of the year is one of the most popular for both visitors and residents of the Northeast, and for those who have witnessed the glorious colors of fall it is easy to see why.
The northern parts of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are just starting to see the trees change color. The towns of Newport and St. Johnsbury in Vermont, Berlin and Bretton Woods in New Hampshire and Greenville and Millinocket in Maine are the places to be right now. These north woods towns have a mix of working towns with paper and lumber mills, quaint hotels, bed and breakfasts and resorts. There is a range of places to stay and things to do for visitors of all ages.
As the autumn progress, the southern mountains in all three states turn yellow, orange and gold. Whether you live here, have a holiday home or just visit, it is a something to behold. The mountains are ablaze, and the valleys are full of the events and festivals of the season. The peak color areas in Vermont and New Hampshire move down through the college towns of Middlebury, Hanover and Plymouth. The coast of Maine is a beautiful combination of colors, with the blue seas and rocky coastline mixing with the changing leaves. The last towns in Vermont to see great color are Manchester, Bennington and Brattleboro. New Hampshire says goodbye to its golden days as the color passes through its own Manchester, Nashua and Portsmouth on the coast, while the southern Maine coastline is also seeing winter coming.
For these northern New England states, the color is usually over, except for some isolated holdouts, by the end of October. Then, it is time for the southern New England states to enjoy the late autumn color and their own glorious days.
