New Development Planned Near Johns Hopkins

A new multi-use development is being proposed for a neighborhood near the campus of Johns Hopkins Hospital in East Baltimore, Maryland. This new project will include luxury apartments, shops, offices and a hotel. The complex will be in the Washington Hill area of town, and the developers plan to work closely with the hospital to provide services for the employees and visitors.

Overall, the new project is planned to be 1.2 million square feet and cost approximately US $230 million. A dilapidated public housing project was razed several years ago on the land and is now sitting empty, so this is an ideal use for that parcel.

The current plan, which is before the city’s Urban Design and Architecture Review Panel for approval, has 444 new apartments plus shops. While other development projects have slowed and stalled as the economy does the same and the credit crunch hurts new investment, the area and Johns Hopkins Hospital have see quite a bit of redevelopment and growth. This is in large part due to the expansion and redevelopment of the hospital itself, which is the midst of a $1.2 billion renovation on its 80 acre campus.

This new development will add some great shops, apartments and homes to an area of town that wants them, so it looks to be an ideal project.
