British consumers are refusing to relinquish their holidays abroad. As new figures recently released by AENA, the Spanish airport authority, reveal that British visitor numbers to Lanzarote have risen by 15.6% during the first half of 2008. An unexpected upswing that is helping to maintain demand for holiday rental property in Lanzarote. As well as confounding expectations that the credit crunch could sound the death knell for overseas travel.
Lanzarote has long been a hot favourite with overseas investors. Attracting on average around 850,000 British tourists annually. Thanks to a year round clement climate that creates a constant rental calendar for the owners of villas and apartments on the island.
Some observers feared that the impact of the credit crunch, allied with a weakening pound and falling disposable incomes in the UK could spell trouble for Lanzarote, along with many other holiday destinations. As the island is heavily reliant on tourism – which accounts for around 90% of all economic activity.
However the release of the new figures from AENA indicates that 2008 could in fact be the best year for tourism on the island for some time. With 509,755 British visitors holidaying on the island during the first half of 2008. An increase of 15.6% versus the same period in 2007.
And it´s not just the British who are flocking to this small Canary Island just off the coast of Africa. As Irish visitor numbers have also risen by 5.4% across the same period – with 123,047 tourists from Eire visiting the island during the first six months of 2008.
Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian and Austrian tourists have also helped to contribute to an overall increase in total foreign visitor numbers of 4.9%. Whilst Spanish tourist numbers are also up 3.7% for the first half of the year according to the Canary Islands Tourist Board.
These figures represent the best first half performance that Lanzarote has enjoyed in many years –and the island should break the one million British tourist visits barrier for the first time since 2003 if continued throughout the rest of 2008.
News that makes happy reading for owners of apartments and holiday villas in Lanzarote. Whilst also helping to maintain some buoyancy in the islands property market. As despite current international problems the fundamentals of the island economy – ie tourism – remain in good health.
