The Silver Coast of Portugal 

The Silver Coast of Portugal, or Costa de Prata, is quickly becoming a popular place for those interested in having a home in this country. Stretching from Lisbon to Porto, and inland a ways, this area has spectacular beaches and beautiful countryside.

The climate along the Silver Coast is very pleasant, with the Atlantic breezes and Gulf Stream keeping it nice year round. In the summer the highs can get to 30°C but the average is typically in the mid to high 20s, while in the winter the temperature usually averages around 10° C. Temperatures are similar inland, but not as affected by the ocean.

Coimbra is the major city along the Silver Coast, located 40 kilometers inland in the northern part of the region. It is the fourth largest city in Portugal behind Lisbon, Porto and Braga with a population of nearly 150,000 residents. It is 120 kilometers south of Porto and 195 kilometers north of Lisbon and is located on the A1 autoroute. Coimbra has one of the largest and oldest universities in the country and it is a major contributor to the local economy.

Other major towns in this region include Figuera da Foz, Leiria, Alcobaca and Aveiro. There are many small towns and beaches that are charming and attractive for visitors and residents alike. The beaches in this region have not been overrun like those in the Algarve, but the potential is becoming more apparent to developers and international investors. There are kilometers of empty beaches with pristine views and natural surroundings.

Aveiro, in the north of the region, is a fascinating town. It has many small canals crisscrossing the town with arched bridges. Figuera da Foz is one of the more popular resorts north of Lisbon and has a casino for those who like to try their luck. There are a number of beaches stretching out from this seaside town, so you can always find one to suit your desires. Another small town, just inland, is Obidos. This walled village not too far from Lisbon is near the Obidos Lagoon. There are several new resorts being developed nearby, including Bom Succeso, a golfing destination and design resort.

Leira is halfway between Lisbon and Porto just inland from the ocean. This historic town has a large square and castle on a hill that provides great views all around. Nearby is the city of Alcobaca, an important religious destination in Portugal.

There is such a wide variety of property available along the Silver Coast that just about anything is possible for those who want to have a home here. There is plenty of open land, old houses and ruins for those who want to construct their own home from scratch or rebuild on the remains of something older. There are also a number of new developments with open lots that can be purchased to build on as well as pre-planned houses. Small plots of land or ruins can be had for minimal amounts, as low as €20,000. Larger and nicer lots, particularly those on the ocean or beach, can be much more expensive, in the hundreds of thousands.

In addition to lots to build on, there is every type of housing available, not to mention businesses to buy for those who want to live and work here. There are hundreds of apartments and flats, many of which are in beachfront communities and developments. For smaller apartments and those in towns far from the water, prices start as low as €50,000 and go up from there. Along the waterfront the price for nice apartments runs well into €200,000-€300,000.

Small country homes are very inexpensive as you get away from the ocean and into the hills. Some smaller, existing houses can be had for less than €50,000, while nicer ones are plentiful and the prices go up quickly. Large villas, country homes and resort houses can cost well over €1,000,000, but you certainly get a lot for money – especially when compared to southern Portugal and the Algarve.

Travel to the Silver Coast is reasonably easy with its location between Lisbon and Porto. Lisbon has the largest airport with direct flights to cities all over the world, and Porto has some discount airlines that fly to the UK. The northern part of the region is going to be closer to Porto, while the southern parts will be closer to Lisbon. There is a new airport that is currently in the planning stages to be constructed in Ota, which is at the southern end of the Silver Coast. When this is finished, travel to this region will be even easier.

There is train service up and down the coast as well for those who are interested in traveling via rail. There are also several major autoroutes connecting the two major cities and the many towns in between. The A1 is the major route from Porto to Lisbon, and other major roads in the region include the A8, A17, A14 and A23.

Golf Courses on the Silver Coast Portugal

From the town of Alveiro on the northern end of the Silver Coast to Peniche and Lourinhã, just north of Lisbon, this area has much to offer. Golfers can enjoy several courses, including the Praia d’el Ray championship course outside of Obidos.

This resort also has beachfront property and lots to offer visitors. Aveiro is located on a lagoon just off the ocean, and the Espinho beach here has long been one of the most popular in the country, well before the Algarve became known. Between them lies white sand beaches and several smaller towns, including Figueira da Foz and Nazare, two popular vacation destinations. A little inland are the larger towns of Coimbra and Leira, where there are many cultural and historic attractions.

Getting to the Silver Coast

Travel to the Silver Coast is convenient and fast. Porto is an easy and popular flight, and Lisbon isn’t much longer. Airlines fly into Porto (OPO) direct from London and other major European cities. Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, has the largest airport in the country, Portela (LIS). There are direct flights from London, Manchester, Dublin and many other cities throughout Europe and the world. Several discount carriers fly into either of these cities, so there are often good deals to get here.
